THE MAGICIANS. WHERE DO I BEGIN.
Firstly, if you like books, reading, fantasy, magic and/or words that are funny, frustrating, confusing, sexy, exciting and will inflict glee and amazement, then dear god PLEASE GO READ THESE DAMN BOOKS THEY ARE A TREASURE.
But this post is not about the books. This post is about the show and the amazing actors that bring the characters to life!
The Magicians began this year (2016) on SyFy. Originally only airing in America, it has now moved to Australia and (I THINK) the UK. Or you could be naughty and download/stream it like I did. (DON’T TELL ANYONE. I PROMISE I WILL BUY THE DVDS AS SOON AS I SEE THEM IN ANY STORE ANYWHERE, THEY WILL BE MINE.)
Basically I first found the book and whilst researching it, found out that it had became a show that had just started airing?!?!?! Please excuse the use of excessive punctuation, it adequately displays my emotions upon discovering this information.
Now that I am well and truly obsessed, I am flabbergasted (fav word) that everybody ever isn’t instantly obsessed with it. This show remains quite small/unknown but I believe it will become a new cult fetish, with any such luck. I cannot wait for the day because I currently have nobody to discuss, swoon and shout angrily with.
So let’s talk about this. The Magicians is set in a world where Quentin Coldwater is a genius whiz kid waiting for College and indulging his depressive streak with his obsessive love of the ‘Fillory’ books. Fillory is…basically Narnia. I will go more into the world/tongue in cheek approach to the story in the post for the books! You will have to go and find that to see more of my ramblings.
Quentin, in love with this Magic world that does not exist, of course finds out O-M-G that magic does indeed exist and….NO WAY…. Quentin is a Magician.
The first episode introduces and focuses on Quentin, Julia- his long time best friend that is clearly the focus of his secret love and affection- and (most importantly) Eliot (shown above.) Eliot is clearly my favourite so from here on in, ignore any bias. Or get on board with the fandom and join me.
I’ll admit, I wasn’t entirely convinced by the beginning of the pilot. You can tell that the budget is fairly low for this show and the acting takes a while to ease into for some of the characters. By the end of the episode however, I was absolutely hooked and convinced this world was my new love. ❤
WHO COULD NOT ADORE THESE FACES?!?!! There is no other cast that I would openly and confidently state ‘Yes, in fact, I am sure actually, that I would sleep with them all.’
I do not want to give much away about the story line…
There is the normal world. Genius teenagers are plucked out of society and magically invited to take an entrance exam for Brakebills University- a magical college in North America. Either you pass, wherein you begin studying magic, or you do not and your memory is wiped. Magic is hard and flows through complex and taxing hand movements and all the languages you can muster.
The antagonist for this season is a man/magician/creature named ‘The Beast.’ Shit gets dark which I LOVE and there are enough sarcastic comments and emotional relationships to keep you whipped right up until the shocking and heart wrenching finale. I will say no more. I will simply introduce the beautiful amazing characters:
QUENTIN: our protagonist. He is incredibly dorky, humble, beautiful and basically a loser with a depressive streak that you will most likely fall for. Also I was never attracted to book Quentin until I saw Jason Ralph. Damn you, Jason.
ELIOT: The sassy, substance abusing BFF. Incredibly gay, always smoking and spouting sarcasm and always always brilliant and gorgeous. Hale Appleman is a blessing.
MARGO: (known in the books as Janet.) She’s the hot girl that nobody ever realised was clever so she became an incredible bi-atch to atone. She’s deeper than you first give her credit for, and I am all about her sass.
ALICE: The cleverest, most brilliant and only one to have come from a magic family. She is shy and keeps to herself. She is brilliant and she’s a badass and a half. Olivia Taylor Dudley is a gem and can I just be her friend already?
PENNY: The sexy (hm? what? I didn’t say that…) psychic who is 98% of the time in a terrible mood and just wants to stab everyone. Relatable. The most tumblr of them all. Did I mention he was sexy? (And oh so brooding.) Arjun Gupta is hilarious and brings this new version (very different to the book) Penny to life!
JULIA: The lost puppy, she’s out of the circle and has to tough it on her own. Despite her tendency to be just a little bit irritating at times (more so in the book) she is one strong badass lady who can get shit done. Stella Maeve is gorgeous and cool and makes me love Julia even more.
AND THERE WE ARE THEY ARE OUR CORE PLAYERS.
You should watch this show for the magic, the ridiculous jokes and fun that is poked at all the pop culture fantasy such as Narnia, Harry Potter and even Game of Thrones, the Taylor Swift number, the dark moments that will make you feel anxious to sleep in the dark, the amazing relationship between Margo and Eliot as King and Queen of sass, the originality between the show and the books, the sexiness of all the beautiful actors who bring this story to life- AND MOST OF ALL-
